Across it, angular lines and a single sweeping curve cut through to the pale clay below, like a drawing made in shadow. Turn the bowl and a window opens: a patch left free of black glaze, painted in iron brown flecked with rust, and covered by a clear glaze. The bowl itself leans out of round and pinches at the waist. This is a vintage Japanese chawan (tea bowl) in the Kuro-Oribe style (黒織部), the black Oribe of the Mino tradition.

QUICK FACTS
• Type: Japanese tea bowl (茶碗, chawan) for matcha
• Style: Kuro-Oribe style (黒織部風), Mino tradition [attribution unconfirmed]
• Glaze: glossy blue-black iron glaze; a bare "window" painted with iron brown and covered with clear glaze
• Decoration: scraped or carved pale lines through the black glaze; rust-flecked iron-painted abstract motif
• Body: pale buff-grey stoneware with a gritty, pitted surface
• Form: gently deformed rounded bowl with a pinched waist and a small stepped foot
• Marks: no seal or signature visible
• Maker / kiln: [unidentified]
• Age: vintage, [estimate, only if supported]
• Condition: [describe rim, glaze, hairlines, foot]

WHAT IS KURO-ORIBE?
Kuro-Oribe (黒織部) is a black style of Oribe ware, made in Mino (modern Gifu Prefecture) in the Momoyama and early Edo periods. Traditionally, the iron glaze was pulled red-hot from the kiln and cooled quickly so that it turned a lacquer-like black. A plain black bowl that is deformed or clog-shaped is called Oribe-guro (織部黒). When the bowl also carries decoration, such as bare windows painted in iron and covered with a white or clear glaze, or patterns carved into the black glaze, it is called Kuro-Oribe.

IS THIS A TENMOKU BOWL?
Not in the strict sense. A classic tenmoku (天目) bowl is shaped like a mortar, with a lip that narrows and then flares out. This bowl is a rounded, slightly deformed Oribe-style form. It shares the black iron glaze with the tenmoku family, which is why the word is sometimes used loosely for any black glaze.

HOW THIS BOWL RELATES
The structure follows the classic Kuro-Oribe recipe: black glaze, a window left bare and painted in iron, linework cut into the black, and clear glaze below. We describe it as Kuro-Oribe style because we have not confirmed the kiln or the firing method.

THE WABI-SABI DETAILS
The bowl leans, the waist pinches, the linework is bold and the iron painting is speckled with rust. Oribe tea ware was prized for exactly this kind of deliberate imperfection.

DISPLAY AND USE
Sold as a collectible display piece. The glaze composition has not been tested, so we do not recommend using it for food or drink unless you have it tested. Rinse gently and avoid dishwashers and abrasive pads.

CONDITION AND AUTHENTICITY
Sold as a vintage Japanese Kuro-Oribe style chawan, [maker unconfirmed]. Glaze variation, the pitted clay and the rust speckles are part of its character.
