It takes its name from the tea master Furuta Oribe (1544–1615), a pupil and successor of Sen no Rikyū. Where earlier Japanese ceramics prized symmetry and balance, Oribe embraced asymmetry, deliberately bent rims and bodies, deep copper-green glaze and motifs drawn from nature. A classic Oribe design divides the vessel into green-glazed areas and white areas, and the white areas are painted with iron pigment. The style was later reinterpreted by artists such as Kitaōji Rosanjin (1883–1959) and is still made by potters today, including at kilns outside Mino.

HOW THIS PIECE SPEAKS ORIBE
It keeps the classic structure: a glazed, dripping upper half and a pale lower half for the brush. The cobalt blue, however, is a modern voice in the tradition. It is not part of the classic Oribe palette, so we describe this piece as Oribe-style, not as Momoyama or Edo-period Oribe ware.

A DRAWING OPEN TO INTERPRETATION
Oribe paintings are often abstract. Even museum experts note that visitors see very different things in the same design. Here, a hatched canopy-like shape sits above a fringe of wavy lines, with four stems hanging down to small white round drops. What do you see?

THE CRACKLE
The fine network of lines in the cream glaze is crackle (貫入, kannyū), a natural feature of this type of glaze. Over years it can deepen or pick up color.

DISPLAY AND USE
Best for dried stems, branches or a single large bloom. Use a glass or plastic liner for water, because crackled glaze can absorb moisture. Wipe with a soft, damp cloth and avoid soaking.

CONDITION AND AUTHENTICITY
Sold as a vintage Oribe-style vase, [unsigned / mark not legible: ___].
