Through it you can see a band of iron-brown brushwork, painted before the glaze was applied. The rim leans slightly out of round, and the foot carries a spiral cut by hand. This is a vintage Japanese chawan (tea bowl) in the Shino style (志野), made for matcha and the quiet taste of wabi-sabi.

QUICK FACTS
• Type: Japanese tea bowl (茶碗, chawan) for matcha
• Style: e-Shino (絵志野), Shino with iron painting under the glaze, in the Mino tradition [attribution unconfirmed]
• Glaze: thick, opaque white feldspar glaze with pinholes and fine crackle
• Decoration: abstract band painted in iron-brown pigment under the glaze
• Body: pale, soft clay with a spiral-turned, unglazed foot
• Marks: no seal or signature visible in the foot
• Maker / kiln: [unidentified]
• Age: vintage, [estimate, only if supported]
• Condition: [describe rim, glaze, hairlines, foot, tea stains]

WHAT IS SHINO?
Shino is one of the four tea-ceramic styles of Mino (modern Gifu Prefecture), alongside Kizeto, Seto-guro and Oribe. It is known for a thick white glaze that often has tiny holes and a faint reddish blush where the glaze is thin. Before Shino, Mino glazes were mainly wood ash and turned opaque. Shino uses a feldspar glaze that fires to a soft, semi-translucent white, so patterns painted under it show through. The usual pigment is onita (鬼板), a local clay rich in iron and manganese, which fires to red, brown, black or purple tones.

E-SHINO: PAINTING UNDER THE GLAZE
In e-Shino, the design is brushed in iron before glazing. Gifu Prefecture describes Shino painting as resembling ink wash, with figurative motifs such as plants and animals mixed with repeating patterns such as hinoki-gaki (cypress fence), kikkō (tortoise shell) and kagome (woven basket). The most famous Shino bowl, the National Treasure "Unohanagaki" (卯花墻), carries a fence design under its glaze. This bowl's band is abstract, and we do not assign it a motif.

A SHORT HISTORY
For centuries Shino was thought to be made in Seto. In 1930 the potter Arakawa Toyozō found shards with the same bamboo-shoot design at old kiln sites in Mino, which proved Shino was a Mino ware and began its revival. Today Shino is recognized as an Important Intangible Cultural Property, and Living National Treasure Suzuki Osamu has been its recognized holder since 1994. This bowl is a modern or later work in that tradition, and we do not claim a Momoyama date.

THE WABI-SABI DETAILS
Nothing here is perfect. The rim leans, the glaze is dotted with pinholes, the iron line wanders, and the clay is soft. These are the qualities tea masters have loved in Shino for centuries.

DISPLAY AND USE
Suitable for matcha or display. Shino has soft clay and fine crackle, so tea may slowly tint the surface over time, which many collectors value. Rinse in warm water, dry well and avoid long soaking, dishwashers and abrasive pads.

CONDITION AND AUTHENTICITY
Sold as a vintage Japanese Shino-style chawan, [maker unconfirmed].
