Calligraphy Translation & Meaning

The inscription is written in free-flowing Japanese cursive (hiragana with simplified kanji), reading:

利方よ
狂うても
しかるべき道

Romanized:

Rikata yo
Kurū temo
Shikarubeki michi

Literal translation:

“O path of profit,
even if it drives one mad,
it is still considered the proper way.”

Interpretive meaning:

This is not a moral teaching, but rather a subtle social reflection.

The calligraphy expresses a quiet irony:
even when the pursuit of benefit or success causes imbalance or inner turmoil, society often still labels this path as “correct.”

It reflects a distinctly Japanese contemplative viewpoint - observing how people accept emotional or spiritual distortion in exchange for material or social gain.

Rather than preaching, the piece gently questions modern values and human priorities.

Calligraphic Style & Artist Level

The work is executed in expressive semi-cursive (gyō–sō) style, with elongated kana, controlled brush starts and finishes, and intentional spacing throughout the composition.

Although freely written, the strokes show confidence and structural awareness:

  • no trembling lines

  • clear entry and release of the brush

  • deliberate rhythm from top to bottom

This indicates the hand of an experienced calligrapher rather than an amateur.

The layout avoids rigid alignment, allowing the characters to “fall” naturally down the scroll - a compositional approach commonly used in personal, reflective calligraphy rather than formal classical copying.

The text itself appears to be original rather than a famous Zen quote, suggesting a literati-style modern Japanese calligrapher: someone with formal training who writes with personal voice and philosophical intent.

Overall assessment:

This piece represents mid-to-high level contemporary Japanese literati calligraphy, valued more for its thoughtfulness and individuality than for strict classical technique.

Its artistic strength lies in the harmony between message, movement, and empty space.
