Kotobuki – Longevity | Japanese Sosho Calligraphy Scroll | Single Stroke 壽 Showa Gift Art

$89.00

A vintage Japanese kakemono featuring the character 壽 (Ju/Kotobuki — Longevity, Long Life, Celebration) executed in extreme sosho (grass script) at monumental scale. The character occupies approximately 60% of the scroll's full height — an unusually bold scale that gives the piece the presence of a sculpture. Four-line inscription to the left carries the artist's notation and two vivid red cinnabar seals stacked vertically. Gold ochre silk brocade mounting with black lacquered rollers. Warm cream washi with natural patina. Excellent condition.

THE SPIRAL THAT CONTAINS EVERYTHING
壽 is one of the most complex characters in the Chinese-Japanese writing system — in standard script it contains multiple components stacked vertically: the radical for 'old/elder' at the top, layered elements in the middle, and the component for 'inch/measure' at the base. When written in sosho at speed, all these elements merge into a single continuous gesture — a spiral that descends from the bold opened crown through a tightening middle to a sweeping open base. The result is simultaneously a Chinese character, an abstract calligraphic form, and a visual metaphor for life itself: beginning wide, moving through the complexity of the middle years, opening again at the end.

壽 IN JAPANESE CULTURE
壽 (kotobuki) is Japan's foremost celebratory character — displayed at weddings, milestone birthdays, New Year, and any occasion marking longevity or abundance. In traditional Japanese aesthetics, owning a beautifully brushed 壽 is considered profoundly auspicious, an active invitation of good fortune into the home. Gold mounting amplifies this meaning: gold + 壽 is the most celebratory possible combination in Japanese visual culture.

DISPLAY & STYLING
The gold mounting makes this the warmest, most luminous piece in the collection. Exceptional in an entryway, living room focal wall, or dining room. The bold single character reads beautifully at distance — powerful even before a viewer approaches close enough to see the brushwork detail.
