The right half carries six columns of Hành thư calligraphy — likely a Buddhist verse or contemplative poem — in fluid, unhurried brushwork. THE THREE ATTRIBUTES: STAFF, FAN, SANDALS
In the iconography of Japanese Buddhist figure painting, this trio of attributes is precise and meaningful. The staff (khakkhara) identifies the wandering monk — its metal rings traditionally rang to warn small creatures to move from the path, embodying ahimsa (non-harm) in every footstep. The folding fan (ogi) is a mark of the Zen teacher — used in instruction, in ceremony, and as a symbol of the mind that can open and close at will. The straw sandals are the humility of the pilgrim — choosing the most minimal possible contact with the earth, a walking meditation in footwear.

FIGURE AND VERSE AS ONE
The 50/50 split between image and text is not a compromise — it is the classical East Asian format called 詩書画 (shi-sho-ga: poem, calligraphy, painting). The verse does not describe the figure, and the figure does not illustrate the verse.
