The Character: 忍 (Nin)
Dominating the top of the scroll is a single, boldly brushed kanji: 忍 (Nin, also read Shinobu/Shinobi). The character is built from 刃 (blade) positioned directly above 心 (heart) — a vivid visual metaphor for enduring hardship with a blade held at one's own heart, without flinching. In Japanese philosophy this is not passive suffering, but the disciplined strength of a calm mind that holds steady through adversity — the same character, incidentally, that opens 忍者 (ninja), rooted in the art of silent endurance.

The Verse (Dōka)
Below the character, a devotional verse (道歌, dōka — a short poem conveying moral or spiritual teaching) is brushed in flowing cursive kana. Interpreted in spirit, the verse speaks of accumulating quiet understanding like a flower slowly opening, and of the strength that comes from standing firmly on one's own two feet — sufficient to overcome even the darkest night. Read together with the character above, the composition builds a complete teaching: patience cultivated inwardly becomes the strength to stand independently against life's hardest trials.

Seals
The work carries an introductory seal (引首印) in the upper right marking the start of the composition, along with a paired name-seal set in the lower left — one in white-on-red (白文) and one in red-on-white (朱文) — the traditional two-seal combination used by calligraphers to authenticate an original work.

Condition & Presentation
Brushed in bold sumi ink on paper, mounted in traditional silk-brocade borders.
