Vintage Japanese Ceramic Jar, Retirement Gift Inscription, Sansui Landscape Vase

Some ceramic pieces come with an atmosphere; this one comes with a documented human story. Painted around its shoulder in a quiet, monochrome sansui-e (山水絵) style — mountains rendered in soft gray-blue washes, a two-tiered pavilion roofed in warm brown, pine trees in dabbed dark ink, all set against a finely crackled cream glaze — the jar reads more like a landscape painting than a decorative object, closer to Seto or Mino monochrome painting traditions than to the brightly enameled Kutani style it might resemble at a glance.

Turn it over, and the base carries an inscription still fully legible: 退職記念 ("in commemoration of retirement"), 贈 ("respectfully presented"), and 日本交通有志一同 ("from the colleagues of Nihon Kōtsū, together"). Nihon Kōtsū is a real, long-established Japanese transportation company, founded in 1928 and still operating today, best known for its taxi fleet in Tokyo. This jar was very likely commissioned by a group of coworkers as a farewell gift for a retiring colleague — a well-documented custom in Japanese corporate culture, where colleagues pool together to mark a coworker's departure with a lasting, personalized object rather than a card or a bouquet. A handwritten name in ink accompanies the inscription, almost certainly the retiree being honored, though the cursive script isn't confidently legible enough for us to transcribe it with certainty.

What makes a piece like this valuable to a collector isn't a famous kiln name — it's the opposite: a small, dated, human moment preserved intact, tied to a real company whose name can still be verified today. It's Shōwa-era Japan captured mid-gesture, the ceramic equivalent of a farewell card that happened to survive for decades.

As a decorative jar, its generous rounded body and quiet landscape scene work well as a standalone display piece, letting both the painting and the inscription be discovered in turn.
