The Composition
Rather than a poem or teaching, this scroll presents two numerals in bold, blocky script: 五百九十 (590) and 參百九十 (390), rendered in a sturdy, almost architectural Reisho/Kaisho-influenced hand. The precise significance of these two numbers is not indicated on the scroll itself and remains undetermined — it may relate to a specific commission, exercise, or private reference known only to its original context. Presented plainly as numeral calligraphy, the piece reads as a study in bold, minimalist form: the stark visual rhythm of repeated strokes and heavy, confident linework carries its own aesthetic weight independent of any narrative meaning.

A Rare Inscribed Note on Materials
Along the lower edge of the paper, a small inscription reads 無上純黑、菜種油煙墨液 ("Mujō junkoku, nanatane yuen bokueki") — "Supreme pure black, ink made from rapeseed-oil soot." This identifies the ink used as nanohana-yu sumi, a premium traditional Japanese ink made by burning rapeseed oil to produce especially fine, deep soot, prized for yielding an unusually rich, velvety black that ages well and resists fading. Such a direct material notation is uncommon on a finished calligraphic work, giving this scroll unusual documentary interest for collectors who appreciate traditional sumi ink craftsmanship as much as the calligraphy itself.

Condition & Presentation
