The Poem
吹く風に飛ぶ... ("Fuku kaze ni tobu...") — "Carried by the blowing wind, it flies..." The verse describes a kite lifted and tossed gently by the spring breeze, soaring into open sky — a brief, simple image that captures the same unguarded delight shown in the painting below.

Seasonal Imagery (Kigo)
Kite flying (凧揚げ, takoage) and the spring breeze are both traditional symbols of the New Year (お正月, Oshōgatsu) in Japanese seasonal poetry. A kite climbing high into the sky is a time-honored wish for a child's healthy growth, far-reaching ambition, and good fortune in the year ahead — a motif especially popular for New Year gifts and decorations.

The Painting
Rendered in deliberately simple, almost naïve brushstrokes, a small figure — a child or young temple acolyte — tilts their head back in open-mouthed wonder, following the path of a kite overhead. The kite itself is drawn as a plain, boxy shape with a long, softly curving tail trailing in the wind. Rather than realistic detail, the artist captures shin (神, spirit/essence) — the unguarded joy, freedom, and peaceful absorption of a child lost entirely in watching the sky.

Seal
A red seal is stamped prominently beside the poem, near the figure's shoulder, recording the art-name of the Zen monk or Zenga painter who created the work.

Spirit & Setting
Characteristic of Zenga (禅画) and Haiga painting, this scroll favors expressive economy over technical polish — a style long associated with Zen monks painting in moments of spontaneous insight. Its playful, unburdened mood makes it a favorite for tea rooms, Japandi or minimalist interiors, and as a New Year or spring gift symbolizing rising fortune, lofty aspiration, and a calm, carefree mind.

Condition & Presentation
Ink on paper, mounted in warm tan patterned silk-brocade borders.
