This is a small vintage bronze ikebana vessel, cast in an archaistic square-mouthed gu (觚) form with blade-like corner flanges, its surface decorated with taotie mask, kui-dragon, and thunder-pattern (leiwen) motifs drawn from ancient Chinese ritual bronze design, finished in a deep verdigris patina.

Cultural & historical narrative
The taotie mask — a stylized animal face with large spiral eyes, seen across the body of this vessel — is one of the oldest and most enduring motifs in East Asian decorative art, first appearing on Chinese ritual bronzes of the Shang and Zhou dynasties (circa 1600–256 BCE), where it was believed to ward off evil. This archaistic vocabulary was revived and reproduced widely across East Asia in later centuries, including through karakane (唐銅), Japanese bronze ware deliberately cast in the style of ancient Chinese vessels and embraced by literati and sencha (steeped tea) practitioners from the Edo period onward as incense burners, brush pots, and flower vessels for the scholar's studio.
