Vintage Bizen Ware Hanaire Vase, Sangiri Fired Stoneware, Signed Kaneshige Ritouen Kiln

This vintage Japanese Bizen ware hanaire (flower vase) embodies the quiet beauty that has made Bizen one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns for nearly one thousand years. Instead of colorful glazes, its rich surface was created entirely inside a wood-fired kiln, where flame, ash, charcoal, and placement during firing naturally produced the vessel's earthy tones and subtle variations.

The elegant silhouette combines a strong cylindrical lower body with a softly swelling neck, finished by a thick rounded rim. Two small lug handles at the shoulders recall traditional storage jars while adding visual balance and sculptural character.

Most striking is the natural Sangiri (桟切) firing effect visible across the body. Areas protected from direct flame developed soft gray, bluish, olive, and warm brown transitions that could never be duplicated by artificial glazing. Each color shift is the result of chance interactions between clay, ash, oxygen, and fire over many days inside the kiln.

Unlike glazed ceramics, Bizen celebrates the raw beauty of stoneware itself. Tiny iron speckles, subtle firing marks, and natural tonal movement are considered essential qualities rather than imperfections, expressing the Japanese appreciation for wabi-sabi—beauty found in nature, simplicity, and the passage of time.

About Bizen Ware

Originating in Okayama Prefecture, Bizen ware (備前焼) is one of Japan's oldest ceramic traditions, with a history extending back to the Heian Period.

Bizen pieces are fired without glaze at temperatures exceeding 1200°C in large wood-fired climbing kilns. The firing often lasts many days, allowing ash deposits, reduction, and flame movement to create completely natural surface effects.

Collectors admire Bizen for its permanence, restrained elegance, and the fact that no two vessels can ever emerge from the kiln alike.

Signed Base

The vase bears a kiln mark consistent with Kaneshige Ritouen (兼重 利陶苑 / 利陶園).

While the signature indicates production associated with the Kaneshige workshop tradition, the exact individual potter and production date cannot be confirmed without its original signed box (tomobako) or supporting documentation. The attribution is therefore presented according to the visible kiln mark.
