The Teaching
和順積於中、英華形於外 ("Wajun seki o chū, eika kei o gai") — "When harmony and gentleness accumulate within, their brilliance naturally shows itself outwardly." This line draws on classical Confucian thought (echoed in the Book of Rites and related texts), expressing the idea that true radiance and grace are never manufactured on the surface — they are the visible overflow of genuine inner harmony and virtue.

夫婦和、家之肥也 ("Fūfu wa, ka no hi nari") — "When husband and wife are in harmony, that is a family's truest abundance." Drawn directly from the Book of Rites (禮記, Liji), specifically its "Li Yun" chapter, this line names marital harmony — not wealth or status — as the real measure of a flourishing household, with 肥 (hi, literally "fertile" or "rich") used here to mean abundance and flourishing in the fullest sense.

Reading the Two Lines Together
Paired, the two passages build a complete argument: a harmonious inner life (within a person, and within a marriage) is both the source of outward grace and the true foundation of a prosperous home — making this scroll a fitting and meaningful gift for a wedding, anniversary, or new household.

Date & Artist
A small inscription records the date as 乙卯初夏 ("Kinoto-u shoka," "early summer of a Kinoto-u year") — a valid year in the sexagenary cycle, recurring periodically, so the specific year would require further research to pin down precisely. Signed 宗渓 ("Sōkei"), the art-name of the calligrapher.

The Brushwork
Executed in soft, rounded Gyōsho (semi-cursive script), the characters flow with an easy, unforced roundness that visually echoes the verse's own message of gentle, cultivated harmony rather than rigid formality.

Condition & Presentation
Brushed in sumi ink on paper, mounted in soft blue-grey silk-brocade borders.
