The Couplet
風吹不動天邊月、雪壓難折澗底松 ("Fūsui fudō tenpen no tsuki, setsuatsu nanzetsu kantei no matsu") — "The wind blows, yet it cannot disturb the moon at the edge of the sky; the snow presses down, yet it cannot break the pine at the bottom of the ravine." A tightly matched classical couplet, pairing two enduring images of resilience: the distant moon, untouched by the wind no matter how it rages below, and a pine tree rooted deep in a mountain gorge, bending but never breaking under the heavy press of snow.

Zen Reading
Read together, the two lines form a complete teaching on inner steadiness: the "moon at the edge of the sky" represents a clear, awakened mind, untouched by the turbulence of circumstance — worry, conflict, misfortune — just as the moon remains serene regardless of the wind. The "pine at the bottom of the ravine" represents resolve and character, able to withstand pressure and hardship (the snow) without losing its essential form. Together, they offer a complete image of someone whose center cannot be shaken, whatever storms pass through their life.
