The Poem
This hanging scroll (kakemono, 掛物) is brushed in Sōsho (草書, "grass script") — the most fluid and expressive of Japanese calligraphic styles, where characters dissolve into continuous, gestural strokes. The verse reads 山呼沐月宵 (or 空), rendering roughly as "the mountains call out, bathed in the quiet of the moonlit night" — a classical Zen image pairing the dynamic voice of nature (山呼, the mountain's cry) with the stillness of moonlight (沐月, bathing in moonlight). This tension between motion and stillness is a recurring theme in Japanese ink art and Zen poetry, reflecting a mind at peace within the vastness of nature.

A Personal Dedication
To the left of the main verse, a smaller inscription reads 為瑪麗 — "dedicated to Mary" — the name rendered phonetically in kanji, a common practice when Japanese calligraphers created personalized works for Western friends, students, or collectors. This detail gives the scroll a rare, documented human story: a specific act of friendship or teaching captured in ink, likely from the mid-to-late Shōwa era as cultural exchange between Japan and the West flourished.

Artist & Seal
A red seal (落款印) accompanies the inscription, believed to mark the calligrapher's art-name (gō). [Chữ ký/nghệ danh chưa xác định qua nguồn chính thức — sẽ cập nhật nếu tra cứu thêm được.]
