The Verse
我心如白雲 ("Waga kokoro hakuun no gotoshi") — "My mind is like a white cloud." A white cloud drifts freely through the vast sky, gathering and dispersing with the shifting winds, never clinging to any single mountain peak or branch. In Zen thought, this image is a classic metaphor for the awakened mind: clear, unattached, and at ease, having released the grasping and mental clutter that binds ordinary consciousness. To have "a mind like a white cloud" is to move through life's changes with the same effortless freedom.

The Brushwork
What sets this piece apart is its striking calligraphic style: the characters are rendered in a bold, semi-abstract manner that pushes toward the edge of legibility, especially in 心 (heart/mind) and 雲 (cloud), where the strokes seem to break loose from conventional character structure. This kind of deliberate "broken form" (破体, hatai) brushwork is only achievable by a calligrapher who has first mastered classical structure completely — the freedom on display here is a controlled freedom, disciplined rather than careless, and is prized among collectors for the vigor and individuality it brings to the page.

Signature
The smaller inscription reads 弟子大六 ("Deshi Dairoku") — "respectfully brushed by [your/this] disciple, Dairoku." A paired red seal set (white-on-red and red-on-white) beneath the signature authenticates the work.
